About Me

My name is Eric Jensen. I am currently employed as the Equity Coordinator at Battle River School Division in Camrose, Alberta. Although currently working towards educational equity in Battle River, the learning I gained personally and professionally over the course of my life and career has guided my practice.

I grew up in Brooks, Alberta, in a family of now five educators. During this time, I was exposed to an immigration influx, resulting in a substantial growth of diversity in a formerly small, homogenous Albertan town. In the formational years of my youth, I was able to engage with the personal stories, testimonials, and desires from minoritized communities all over the globe. This, in turn, fed my desire to join the educational profession.

Upon completing high school, I attended the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus in Camrose for one year prior to transferring to the U of A’s North Campus in Edmonton. I completed a bachelor of arts in history in 2015 from the University of Alberta where I was privileged enough to gather more insight into social justice. One of the highlights of my undergrad in arts was learning about the history of women and health, especially those in Alberta. Upon completing my BA, I moved straight into a bachelor of education degree with a focus on social studies.

Freshly graduated from by BEd in 2016, I was hired to teach in the small village of Round Hill. I learned a lot about the unique needs of rural-based students during my time at the school, which encouraged me to seek out more equity based learning. This then took me to Wetaskiwin Composite High School. This was where I really started to undertake classroom equity work. I established a Queer Students Association, was able to take part in Indigenous ceremonies and teachings, and developed a broader understanding of the diverse world in which I inhabit. After a short stint in Norwood school in Wetaskiwin, I was finally privileged enough to arrive at my current role.

As Equity Coordinator in Battle River School Division, I am able to support students in the meaningful ways I discovered in Wetaskiwin. I can establish system-wide supports for minoritized students including 2SLGBTQ+, Indigenous, students of color, students with disabilities, and many more. This work has been incredibly rewarding as I continue to learn and grow.
